Brew filter coffee by hand-this is how you preparing a perfect coffee with the hand filter

Who doesn't love it when the wonderful smell of coffee wafts through the room in the morning? You can achieve particularly full-bodied and aromatic coffee with the classic hand filter. With the right preparation and technique, this uncomplicated and quick method of preparation guarantees a great result - we explain what is important when brewing coffee.

Preparing for the perfect cup of coffee

What material should a hand filter be made of?

In contrast to plastic and stainless steel, a ceramic or porcelain filter retains the heat much better and distributes it evenly in the filter and coffee powder.

When buying permanent filters, pay particular attention to environmentally friendly materials such as bamboo, stainless steel, ceramic or porcelain and reusable filter inserts.

The right coffee & degree of grinding

High-quality & freshly ground coffee is crucial for the taste experience.

The coffee aromas are locked in the coffee beans and are only released when the coffee is ground. The grain size of the grind also has a significant impact on the taste, since the wrong degree of grind can make the coffee taste too thin, too strong or too sour and bitter. For optimal flow and full-bodied coffee enjoyment, we recommend that you use freshly ground coffee with a medium-fine grind, which roughly corresponds to the consistency of sand.

water quality and temperature

The quality of the water also contributes a lot to the taste of your coffee. The softer the water, the more the caffeic acids come to the fore, while hard water neutralizes the fruit acids in the coffee. The full coffee aroma unfolds best in fresh water with a medium degree of hardness. The ideal water temperature is between 92 - 96 °C. If the water is hotter, the coffee tastes bitter; if it's colder than 85 °C, the coffee tastes watery and sour.

This is how the manual preparation of perfectly brewed coffee succeeds

Step 1 - Prepare paper filter

Make sure that the coffee filter and the paper filter have the same filter size. First place an unbleached paper filter in the funnel and briefly pour hot water over it. This will warm up the filter holder and remove the odor from the filter paper.

Step 2 - Add ground coffee

Now add the coffee powder.

We recommend you use about 12 grams of ground coffee per 120 ml of water. If you like drinking strong coffee, then test yourself with correspondingly larger amounts of powder.

Step 3 - Add water

Pour some water into the permanent filter until it is about 1 cm above the ground coffee. Now let the coffee swell for about 30 seconds. After the water has run through, slowly pour in the remaining water from the center outwards in a circular motion. The optimal throughput time is 3 to 4 minutes.

Enjoy aromatic coffee!

Now you can remove the filter holder and enjoy your hot cup of coffee!

Did you know?

You can recognize perfectly brewed coffee by the fact that the surface of the coffee is particularly smooth after it has been poured - all the ingredients have been evenly distributed in the coffee.
